Warning light on the dashboard

A light is on and you are not sure how urgent it is. Colour is your first clue.

Warning lights use colour to communicate urgency. Red means stop; amber means get it checked; green or blue is usually just information.

Quick checklist

Your progress is saved on this device only.

What to do, step by step

  1. 1

    Note the colour

Red: stop safely. Amber: check soon. Green/blue: information only.

  2. 2

Check the manual for the symbol

The manual lists exactly what each light means for your car.

  3. 3

    If it is red, stop

Oil pressure, temperature or brakes are not things to gamble with.

  4. 4

If it is amber, get it scanned

A garage or a cheap OBD reader will tell you the code.
